In each chromatographic image file, GC Image maintains a journal of operations that have been performed. Each entry in a journal includes the name of the operation, the parameters that were used in applying the operation, and all information that is required to undo the operation. A script gives a sequence of operations and the parameters for the operation in the same format as a journal, but does not have information for undoing the operation.

To see a list of the operations performed, select the List Operations option from the Edit menu of the Image Viewer. GC Image presents a dialog with a text box listing a brief description for each operation that has been performed on the image. Operations are given in reverse chronological order (i.e., as a stack), with the most recent operation listed first. To close the operations list, click the OK button on the List Operations popup. Figure 1 shows the List Operations popup.

To undo the most recent operation, click the Undo button or select the Undo option from the Edit menu of the Image Viewer . The last operation that was performed to modify the image will be reversed. Undo also can be performed from the List Operations dialog.
To undo all operations, select the Undo All option from the Edit menu. All operations will be reversed, putting the image back to its starting state.
The Operations List can be deleted from the current image by clicking the Delete List button on the List Operations dialog. The user is prompted to confirm the deletion of the Operations List because the deletion cannot be undone. After the deletion, the Operations List has a single operation — the deletion of the Operations List . Possible reasons for deleting the operations list are to keep the operations sequence confidential or to reduce the file size.
To save and optionally view a formatted journal listing the operations that have been performed on the image, select the Save Journal option from the File menu of the Image Viewer. The user is prompted to name the destination file, which is formatted as an XML file and can viewed with a web browser. To view the journal after it is saved, check "View after saving". Figure 2 illustrates a journal. The journal lists the operations in chronological order. The Save Journal operation also can be performed from the List Operations dialog.

To save and optionally view a script with the operations that have been performed on the image, select the Save Script option from the File menu of the Image Viewer. The user is prompted to name the destination file, which is formatted as an XML file and can viewed with a web browser. To view the script after it is saved, check "View after saving". Figure 2 illustrates a script. The script consists of the operations in sequential order. The Save Script operation also can be performed from the List Operations dialog.

A journal reported in an XML file can be seen as a sequence of instructions to be executed on an image. A script is executed by choosing the Edit -> Run Script option from the menu bar and then selecting the file that contains the script. Script execution is a feature for which development and testing are ongoing, so results of script execution should be confirmed.
